Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) has been rapidly changing the landscape of periodontics with new solutions for improving diagnosis, treatment planning, and surgical outcomes. The incorporation of AI technologies, including machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), in periodontal practice has been continuously transforming the way clinical practitioners examine and treat periodontal disease. 7’8 AI-based systems can analyze large radiographic images, clinical data, including medical history, and help in early detection and diagnosis of periodontal conditions such as bone loss, gingivitis, or periodontitis. Furthermore, AI algorithms are employed to predict disease trajectory and develop personalized treatment regimens, leading to more efficient and effective care. AI also holds promise for periodontal surgery, as robotic systems advance surgical accuracy and decrease human error. They assist clinicians in dental implant installation and periodontal procedures, providing for successful results. However, adoption of AI in periodontics faces challenges, including ethical aspects, data security, and the requirement for extensive training among clinicians. Yet, the possible advantages of AI for providing optimal patient care, facilitating processes, and improving decision-making make it an outstanding instrument for contemporary periodontists. As AI continues to grow, applications in periodontics will increase, offering more advanced tools for patient management, diagnosis, and treatment. This narrative review will focus on the current status of AI in periodontology and its potential future impact on routine practice.
